The monastery also known as "the Ruthenian Devín" in the village of Krásny brod
Legend has it that a blind, tired beggar washed his face with water from a well in Krásný Brod. After doing so, he noticed a glowing cross hovering over the well and began to see again. The "rumor" of this miracle spread very quickly because local people often saw light above this well. At this place grew a small chapel in which they placed the icon. To this day, it is called "Krásnobrodská Bohorodička" and it also has its song dating from the 18th century, whose in Cyrillic written manuscript should be stored in the library of Charles University in Prague.
The monastery was built in about the 14th century. The monastery in Krásný Brod became an important center of spiritual life. Its existence was threatened several times. For the first time in the early 17th century, when Valent Drugeth set it on fire. This happened after his horses were frightened in front of the monastery in 1603 and the carriage was overturned, while the count broke his arm. However, it did not heal for a long time, so he promised, he could build a new monastery. He kept his word and restored the monastery in 1605 after his recovery. Another test came in the 18th century when the monastery was ravaged several times. The crossing of the front during the First World War became fatal for the monastery, as Krásny Brod lies in an area that was an important road to Halíč related to the Lupkov Pass.
It is interesting that in the Krásny Brod monastery there was a novitiate for young candidates of the Basilian Order and a philosophical school. Several important professors taught there, such as Arsenij Kocák, the author of the first grammar for the Ruthenians or the ethnographer Anatolij Kralický, the historian Bazilovič and also the national awakeners Alexander Pavlovič, Adolf I. Dobriansky, and Alexander Duchnovič.
If you have in your plans to explore this border region, don't forget to visit the village of Habura, above which rises a statue of Earl Laborec. We recommend visiting the village of Kalinov either. In the area of the village, there is military equipment and in its center, there is a memorial, which is a memento of war events. Directly above the town of Medzilaborce, a new lookout tower Kyčera is build. If that's not enough for you, go to the nearby village of Vladiča, where you will find wonderful waterfalls and a village museum.
