Shelter huts in the Poloniny
Národný park Poloniny national park (NP) with its area of almost 300 square kilometers offers tourists, in addition to standard housing in pensions, cottages, or private houses, also five shelter huts, in which the traveler can "bow his head" all year round. One of the reasons for building these so-called "alpinky" is the fact that in the national park it is possible to camp only in reserved places. This is regulated by law and the visiting rules of the park, which are good to study before the trip. You can find it at this link.
Four shelter huts were created by the Poloniny National Park Administration. Two of them (Ruské Sedlo and Sedlo pod Čierťažou - you will also find springs with water) are located on the route of the ridge Osadné - Kremenec (1210 m above sea level) - Nová Sedlica. Originally, there were only these two shelter huts in the national park, and their location in the field was logistically designed so that it was possible to complete the ridge during the summer tourist season in three days and two nights. Another was added in the village of Zboj. It is located in a recreation zone, where tourists will find, in addition to the camp, also the mineral spring Kvasná voda.
One shelter hut is also located above the village of Runina. It is located about 800 meters from the village center and is located on the Brehy meadow. It can be reached by following the blue sign that leads to the displaced village of Ruské. Runina is the highest village in Horný Zemplín. Among other things, it is a popular location for observing stars. As you know, the národný park Poloniny national park is also a Dark Sky Park with the lowest light pollution in Slovakia. Runina is also the starting point for Tri studničky, Ďurkovec hill and Riabu skalu hill. If you are already in this picturesque village, also stop at the cemetery from the First World War, a small reservoir or flysch waterfall, which is located at the Jewish cemetery at the beginning of the village.
The fifth shelter is situated near the village of Nová Sedlica, in the relaxation zone of Poľana, which is about 1.5 kilometers from the village center. It is located on the route of the yellow tourist trail, which leads to Medová baba, Riaba skala, and Ďurkovec. There is also a pond.
Every wooden building is measuring approximately 3 x 4.5 meters and has space for sleeping. The cottages have a capacity for ten people. The shelter huts are freely available, always open to anyone who needs a break. We don't have to remind you that - "what you bring to the forest, you take from it".
In the winter season, the hiking trails are not maintained. If you are at the very beginning of Slovakia, do not miss the primeval forests which are part of the UNESCO, enjoy the beautiful views from Ďurkovec or Riaba skaly hills, be in three places at once (Kremenec) and visit also the unique wooden churches.
