Fascist reprisals in eastern Slovakia
The exposition of the SNP Museum entitled Fascist reprisals in eastern Slovakia is located in a small village in the Stropkov district of Tokajík. The tragedies of the past cannot be forgotten. On Sunday, November 19, 1944, members of the German commando gathered 32 men from this village in the garden near the local church. The soldiers then took them about a kilometer from the village, where they were shot. Two men survived the execution because they found themselves under a pile of dead bodies. They lay at the scene of the massacre for another four weeks. The other inhabitants were expelled from their homes after this execution and the village was looted and burned. A similar fate befell other villages in the area. It was revenge for allegedly helping the partisans. These tragic events are commemorated by a memorial located in the local cemetery and museum.
